Spring 2005 Local Benefactor Returns Gift of Good Health with $1 Million DonationKen Gill beat prostate cancer 15 years ago. Today he is helping other men do the same with a $1 million gift to the AAMC Foundation to advance AAMC as a regional center for the treatment, understanding, and prevention of the disease. The Gill gift will help to fund a “Navigator” to assist men and their families to understand prostate cancer, its preventive measures, clinical trials and varying treatment options to fight the disease. The contribution also will support prostate cancer community education.
Ken and Joanne Gill “Researching the best prostate cancer treatment plan for the short and long term can be difficult and burdensome. The Prostate Cancer Navigator will provide personalized care to patients via educational and emotional support ensuring complete patient care,” said Mr. Gill, a businessman residing in Severna Park with his wife, Joanne. “The Prostate Cancer Navigator’s personalized service throughout the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer mirrors a similar program we have for breast, brain and thoracic cancers. We’re excited to take this first step—of what we hope will be many—in building with the Gills a personalized navigator program. This will offer the very best in treatment and education that will improve the region’s healthcare in this area,” said Linda W. Ferris, Ph.D., executive director of AAMC’s DeCesaris Cancer Institute and vice president for strategic planning. “Ken and Joanne’s generosity leads the way in establishing a legacy to build an infrastructure to help our community understand prostate cancer and its treatments in a sophisticated method through an information database and superior care service,” said Dr. George W. Yu, Mr. Gill’s physician who assisted in the direction of this donation. Mr. Gill said, “I hope my charitable gift accomplishes two objectives. First, I want it to provide hope for, and awareness about, prostate cancer, its prevention and care. Secondly, when Lesly and Pat Sajak made their charitable gift, it impressed me. I hope my gift impresses others to give to AAMC.”

Mr. Gill structured his major gift through charitable gift planning to ensure his philanthropic commitment to AAMC would best serve his charitable, financial and family interests. The AAMC Foundation works with individuals and families along with their professional advisors in charitable gift planning to ensure every objective in making a philanthropic gift is accomplished. Mr. Gill said, “My wife and I were taught at an early age about the responsibility of bettering the community. We accomplish that by giving charitably to institutions that make a positive difference in people’s lives. Charity is about being generous with both money and time. We taught that lesson to our three children. They are now teaching that same lesson to our seven grandchildren. Joanne and I are fortunate to be in a financial position to improve our community through AAMC, which enhances the region’s long-term healthcare.” The AAMC Foundation is a non-profit organization that secures immediate and deferred charitable gifts from individuals and organizations to advance AAMC’s regional healthcare efforts.
