Patricia Czapp, M.D., is the AAMC community practice representative (CPR). Dr. Czapp is board certified in family medicine and has been with Annapolis Primary Care for eight years. Previously, Dr. Czapp practiced with Johns Hopkins Medical Services and the Severna Park office of Potomac Physicians.

Dr. Czapp completed her medical training in 1990 and her residency in 1993 at the Georgetown University Medical School, where she served as chief resident of family medicine, 1992-93. She became a member of the Anne Arundel Medical Center medical staff in 1994 and has held leadership positions that include chief and associate chief of the family medicine service. She currently serves on the board of directors for Anne Arundel Health System, Inc.

Dr. Czapp said, “My job as CPR wouldn’t exist if practicing medicine in Maryland was all wine and roses.  Anne Arundel Health System recognized years ago that doctors, particularly those in primary care, are stressed by rising overhead costs and declining reimbursement.  As part of a larger plan to address these concerns, the Health System worked with medical staff leadership to create the CPR position.  It’s one of many investments they’re making in a spirit of collaboration with the medical community.  I’m delighted to be the first CPR.  I spend 70 percent of my time practicing medicine, and 30 percent of my time developing and implementing programs to benefit our community physicians.  I am rolling out a group discount purchasing program right now to help area practices offset overhead costs.  I have been networking with other doctors to discover their needs, and I have several new projects in the pipeline.  Stay tuned!”

Stephen E. Faust, M.D., is chair of the surgery department. Dr. Faust is board certified in orthopedic surgery and is a founding member and the co-director of the Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center. He is also the co-director of The Maryland Knee and Hip Center. He specializes in spine care and total joint replacement. Dr. Faust is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School; he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery.

While in the Navy, he served as chief of orthopaedics at the Beaufort Naval Hospital in South Carolina. Dr. Faust was granted membership of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons in 1998. He was elected to fellowship at the North American Spine Society in July 1992. Dr. Faust lectures at national meetings and workshops. Most recently, he served as medical director of the Anne Arundel Medical Center Spine Center.

Dr. Faust said, “The position as surgery chair represents an exciting opportunity for me personally, and I think for Anne Arundel Medical Center as well.  The chair positions represent the highest level that practicing physicians have ever had in the administration of the Medical Center, and as such give the chairs the chance to bring issues affecting physicians and patient care forward in a new and hopefully more effective way.  The response of the entire hospital system to the new positions has been enthusiastic and gratifying.  My aim is to use this opportunity to work with the highly dedicated and competent administration of the Medical Center to improve patient care, working conditions, and operating efficiency for surgical services—and I feel that we will be successful in this endeavor.”

George Samaras, M.D., is chair of the department of medicine. Dr. Samaras, of Annapolis Internal Medicine, is a former president of the AAMC Medical Staff. He is board certified in internal medicine and a specialist in nephrology.  He has practiced medicine in Annapolis since 1974 when he established Annapolis Internal Medicine. He completed his medical training in internal medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Maryland General Hospital, where he was chief medical resident. During that time he continued his studies in nephrology. Dr. Samaras is a native Annapolitan, married and the proud father of six grown children.

Dr. Samaras said, “Reorganization of the medical staff and the establishment of the department chair positions will position the medical staff and the hospital in the most collaborative and integrated relationship in its history. My goal as department chair of medicine is to make this reorganization successful.”

Henry J. Sobel, M.D., MBA is chair of the women’s and children’s services department. Dr. Sobel is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. He has practiced in the Annapolis community since 1981; he is a 1977 graduate of Howard University College of Medicine. He completed his ob/gyn residency at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington; D.C. Dr. Sobel is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as well as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He recently completed a Johns Hopkins University graduate certificate program in the Business of Medicine. Dr. Sobel was previously service chief for ob/gyn at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He has served in other leadership roles within the hospital system. He volunteers his time in gynecologic care at the AAMC Annapolis Outreach Center.

Dr. Sobel said, “After a stint of a year and a half working on health care policy in Washington, D.C., I am thrilled to be back in my community.  Anne Arundel Medical Center has taken a central role in supporting the continued access to top quality medical care for our women and children during this time of financial stress and legal crisis.”
