Further imaging is sometimes recommended for an abnormal screening mammogram. This happens in less than ten percent of patients. Usually the additional testing, which may include special mammogram views and/or ultrasound, is normal. Sometimes, an abnormality will require a procedure such as a needle aspiration or core biopsy. The radiologist will discuss this with you during your appointment.

For patients who are at high risk for developing breast cancer, an MRI of the breasts may be added to your screening program. Since this exam may cause additional work up and possibly biopsies, it is best used in the high risk population.

In patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer, MRI or PET/CT scans may be used to help define the extent of disease.
