Early Detection and Diagnosis = Better Outcomes for Breast Health

Early detection gives medical professionals time to create a meaningful, life-saving defense before complications of breast cancer set in. The five-year survival rate for breast cancer is now 97 percent, and annual survival rates continue to increase.

Learn Your “Normal” Breast Through Self-Exams

You can boost your own protection with regular monthly self-exams. You will get to know the normal appearance and feel of your breasts. This will help you detect any changes. Breast tissue can have a spongy feeling and does not feel smooth like a pane of glass. If something feels concerning to you, notify your medical care provider. If additional evaluation is needed with mammography and/or ultrasound, just know that many of these findings will turn out to be benign, or non-cancerous. According to the American Cancer Society, four of five lumps may not turn out to be cancer when they are tested.

Digital Mammograms Provide Accurate Readings in Less Time

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mammograms remain one of the best ways to identify breast cancer early, when it can be more easily treated. Mammograms can find an abnormality up to three years before it can be felt.

Digital mammograms are more sensitive in cancer detection for women with dense breast tissue, premenopausal women, or those under age 50. Digital imaging also means that your mammogram will be saved and can be available for use throughout a healthcare facility.
