Professional Education and ResearchClinical Trials
The AAMC Breast Center enrolls
25x as many patients in clinical trials as the national average. Because our Center's goal is excellence in breast care, we want to find out as much as possible about how to find tumors at earlier stages, take care of cancers less invasively, and learn about new prevention strategies. We constantly seek out clinical trials that give us and our patients the opportunity to learn more about breast health and care. One way to measure the quality of a comprehensive facility dedicated to breast care is to look at its participation in clinical trials. The national average for breast patients participating in trials is around 2%. At the Breast Center, almost 50% of our patients opt to participate in trials. We want every patient to have the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial. To be able to participate in clinical trials, a hospital must meet certain guidelines and should have a high volume of patients. AAMC does both. Recent trials have investigated topics such as nipple sensation and function after surgery. The number and range of clinical trials we offer is a good measure of the caliber of our Center and our commitment to learning. We want our physicians, staff and patients to benefit from the knowledge we gain as we continue to explore clinical trial opportunities. |
