Professional Education and ResearchCMECMEs are offered throughout the year to primary care physicians and OB/GYNs. Past topics have included breast disease, benign masses, benign mammographic abnormalities, and breast infections. Different areas of breast care are covered and vary depending on the requests of staff and attendees. The Breast Center sponsors a yearly course for general surgeons who want to train in specialty breast procedures. Surgeons from around the country attend this 2-day course on breast surgery, breast care, and techniques such as sentinel node biopsy.
(l-r) Breast Surgeons Richard Fine, M.D. and Peter Beitch, M.D. along with Trena Depel, clinical affairs manager for Sanarus Medical Inc., a biopsy device manufacturing company, and Medical Director of the AAMC Breast Center Lorraine Tafra, M.D., discuss results of a patient sonogram during the 2004 Mid-Atlantic Breast Surgery Course held July 8-9 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Thirty-five participants at the two-day course traveled from the District of Columbia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The course was designed to provide the general surgeon with the knowledge and skills to provide state-of-the-art care to breast patients. Topics included diagnosing breast disease through ultrasound, managing high-risk patients, breast cancer surgical techniques, and a sentinel node biopsy update. |
