Breast Cancer Prevention & Education

The Breast Center isn't just for women who have breast disease. We also provide educational tools to teach women how to maintain optimum health and reduce the risk of cancer. Promising new diagnostic and prevention programs are available to help women with this goal.

• Risk Assessment and Prevention Program (RAPP)
• Genetic Counseling
• Community education about screening mammography and breast self-exam

Easy things that all women should do to help prevent breast cancer:

• Annual Exam
  
• A complete physical each year promotes good health, and can incorporate a clinical breast exam, increasing the chances that breast cancer can be caught early.
• Breast Self Exam
  Monthly breast self exams starting at age 18 are important for early detection. If you are unsure about how to do a breast self exam, call the Breast Center for a consultation.
• Mammograms
  After ago 40, women should have a mammogram every year. Women who are at high risk should begin getting annual mammograms at age 35. All of our mammograms are read at the Breast Center by dedicated mammographers --  radiologists specially trained in interpreting
• Nicotine Dependence Program
  If you're smoking and want to quit, we can help.
• Survivors Offering Support (SOS) Program

Alternative and Complementary Programs

The AAMC Healing Arts Center complements the Breast Center’s technologies with therapies that have been used for thousands of years. Wellness services that integrate both physical and mental health include:

• Nutrition counseling
• Massage therapy
• Acupuncture
• Guided Imagery/Stress Management
• Wellness Services Support Groups
