Breast Cancer Support

SOS: Survivors Offering Support

It can be a lonely feeling, but you’re far from being alone. From the Breast Center at AAMC, the reassurance of connecting with someone who’s been through it.

The Breast Center ispleased to offer an important support program that pairs volunteers who have survived breast cancer with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.

Selected and matched with the new patient by similarities in age, lifestyle and the stage of the breast cancer, the survivor shares insights into her personal breast cancer experience, while providing information and emotional support to the new patient through the course of diagnosis and treatment.

Volunteers are trained mentors who provide an invaluable “buddy support system” and help make the breast cancer journey less confusing and solitary.

Support Groups

Women can find comfort and wisdom through the help of others. See our listings of support groups to find one for you.

METAvivor Membership Request Form

The Breast Center at AAMC is pleased to offer METAvivor, a support group dedicated to providing hope, peer support, and helpful resources to those whose breast cancer has spread.

The METAvivor support group is run by, and for, those with metastatic breast cancer.  The members meet socially for everything from morning coffee to weekend outings, they share helpful information, invite guest speakers to address them on relevant issues, and promote increased awareness of metastatic breast cancer -- awareness they hope will lead to improved treatments and eventually a cure.

METAvivor offers an environment where participants can discuss their situation freely with others who are undergoing similar experiences, and a place where they can share suggestions for coping as well as receive heartfelt empathy for challenges faced.  At the same time, METAvivor encourages its members to find joy in every day, to laugh, and to live their lives to the fullest.

We believe this pro-active approach helps the participants feel they have retaken a certain amount of control over their lives, and gives them a renewed sense of hope.

METAvivor welcomes all those with Stage IV breast cancer.  For more information, please contact:

Transition to Wellness Workshops for Breast Cancer

Transition to Wellness Workshops for Breast Cancer survivors completing treatment are held at 6:00pm the last Monday of every month except May and Dec. in the Med Conf room, Floor 2 of the Sajack Pavilion.

The Transitions Workshop recognizes the defaulters faced by many patients as they move into life after cancer treatment.  Transitions provides a "Jumpstart into Survivorship" by providing insight from other survivors,  a checklist for healthy living choices, a checklist on what is needed from the medical community to be a successful survivor and a preview of Wellness strategies from Wellness Practitioners.

To register, please call 443.481.5305.  Transitions is sponsored in part by a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure  Maryland Affiliate.
