The DeCesaris Cancer Institute is a free-standing, comprehensive cancer center located on the campus of Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. Featuring state-of-the-art technology in a warm and welcoming environment, nearly all treatment and follow-up cancer care is centrally located at the Institute.
The DeCesaris Cancer Institute was named in honor of Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris for their $3 million gift in December 2002. The cancer center provides comprehensive cancer screenings for early detection, advanced diagnostic treatment and care by a collaborative team of fellowship-trained and board-certified cancer specialists. This also includes follow-up care with the goal to eliminate the cancer and prevent or reduce the chance of recurrence.
The Institute also includes a clinical trials unit providing patients with access to new therapies. To support patients' and families' survivorship journey, the center also includes nutrition and wellness, support groups, and counseling. There's also a resource library with computers and wireless internet access for patients and families.
The DeCesaris Cancer Institute is nationally recognized by several organizations for its forward-thinking strategic planning, pioneering programs such as survivorship, and replicable models of care.
To ensure our patients receive the best care possible, a weekly tumor board meeting is held at which the Institute's medical, radiation and surgical oncologists, radiologists, geneticists, social workers and nutritionists meet to discuss and review all cancer cases. This type of seamless collaboration helps ensure patients receive the highest quality care possible. Our patients get the benefit of having their case discussed by multiple specialists without having to visit each one individually. The use of tumor boards is a protocol usually seen only in large academic medical centers and universities.
Because our specialists pool their knowledge, our patients receive better coordinated care. In addition, our teams of nationally certified oncology nurses and nurse navigators help guide patients through all aspects of their cancer treatment and follow-up care. This includes addressing cancer survivors' emotional, physical and spiritual needs and encouraging healthy behaviors that may reduce the risk of relapse.
Patients may enter the Institute at any stage. They may suspect that they have cancer or they may have recently been diagnosed or they may already be in treatment. They may come because they want a second opinion or because they want a change of venue.
Because of its strong base of support from the community, the DeCesaris Cancer Institute continues to acquire the latest in medical technology and attract sophisticated talent to run it and be part of it. The DeCesaris Cancer Institute has a responsibility to the overall health of our community, and encompasses prevention, diagnosis and treatment of malignant disease.
