AAMC Vision 2010 Campus Expansion

AAMC Vision 2010
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the Vision 2010 Strategic Plan?

A: The AAMC Vision 2010 Strategic Plan is a blueprint for the health system’s future as AAMC becomes the health care destination of choice for patients from throughout the region. It focuses on facilities and services expansion, as well as increased physician collaboration, staff development and enhanced patient experiences.>>Back to top

Q: What are the new, key elements of the facilities expansion?

A: An eight-level patient tower that includes 50 new private patient rooms and eight additional operating rooms, an expanded emergency department with a dedicated pediatric emergency department and inpatient unit, and a new seven-story building for physician offices, ambulatory services and a Health Sciences Institute. >>Back to top

Q: What is the Health Sciences Institute?

A: The AAMC Health Sciences Institute will be a designated area for medical health seminars and education. The institute will be located on the seventh floor of the new AAMC Ambulatory Services Pavilion and will contain a 400-seat meeting room, lecture rooms and classrooms. AAMC will host Continuing Medical Education (CME) events and clinical teams will be able to hold teleconferences with physicians from throughout the country. The AAMC Health Sciences Institute also will host AAMC community educational events and professional educational seminars.>>Back to top

Q: What “green” elements is AAMC incorporating into the design of the new building?

A: AAMC is taking a number of steps to make its campus more environmentally friendly. AAMC has applied for L.E.E.D. certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and has added “green” components to construction projects.
The health system has committed to incorporate these components for an additional $2 million investment, which it believes will be returned in future savings. AAMC’s second patient tower will have a “green” roof that will catch and filter rain water to protect nearby Chesapeake Bay tributaries. AAMC has made changes and adaptations to the HVAC system plans in its new buildings, and has adjusted the construction outlines for both lighting and plumbing fixtures to make them more environmentally friendly. AAMC is also evaluating LED lighting in exits, working to use more renewable resources in our interiors, and contracting with suppliers who can provide us materials within a 300-mile radius to reduce the cost of shipping major building materials. >>Back to top

Q: What will AAMC’s capacity be once the expansion is complete?

A: When the expansion is complete, AAMC will have the ability to admit more than 28,000 patients annually. In the 12-month period ending June 30, 2007, AAMC admitted 22,610 patients.>>Back to top

Q: Will the emergency department expansion decrease waiting times?

A: While AAMC cannot control wait times, often dictated by patient conditions and the number of emergencies at any given time, the expanded emergency room will be able to better serve the increased number of patients who seek emergency care at AAMC. In the 12-month period ending June 30, 2007, 72,390 patients came to AAMC’s emergency room for care.
In addition, AAMC also will add a pediatric emergency department to provide children and their families the specialized care they need and deserve.>>Back to top

Q: How will the pediatric emergency department differ from the current emergency department and how will my family benefit?

A: The AAMC Pediatric Emergency Department will be a unit dedicated specifically for younger patients. Families will benefit from pediatric specialists caring for their child in an environment separated from AAMC’s normal emergency department, and can feel confident knowing their child is being cared for by some of the region’s top pediatric specialists, nurses and clinicians.
Should a child need to be admitted to the hospital, the AAMC pediatric emergency department also will house the pediatric inpatient unit to provide the best possible care for young patients and their families. >>Back to top

Q: Will there be more physician practices located on the AAMC campus?

A: Yes. Physicians from throughout Anne Arundel and surrounding counties have expressed interest in obtaining space within the new AAMC Ambulatory Services Pavilion (ASP). As that facility nears completion, AAMC will announce which AAMC staff and physician offices will be located here. >>Back to top

Q: How will I cross from the East Campus to the West Campus?

A: Currently, AAMC provides a free shuttle service between the East and West campuses. In the future, patients and staff may also cross Medical Parkway via a new pedestrian walkway which will connect the two campuses.>>Back to top

Q: How many free parking spaces will AAMC have when the expansion is finished?

A: Upon completion of the AAMC expansion projects, more than 4,000 free, garage covered parking spaces will be available on the AAMC campus. Garages are strategically located adjacent to each major pavilion. top >>Back to top
