AAMC, a regional health system headquartered in Annapolis, is the third busiest medical center in Maryland as measured by the number of patients it cares for each year. Nationally recognized in heart care, our specialists perform thousands of cardiac-related procedures every year. AAMC offers a wide range of quality heart services, from prevention and diagnosis of heart disease to interventional cardiology procedures and rehabilitation. The missing link is heart surgery.
In 2015, AAMC filed a Certificate of Need (CON) application with the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) to gain approval to develop a cardiac surgery program at the hospital. AAMC will collaborate with the Johns Hopkins Division of Cardiac Surgery to bring renowned cardiac surgeons to AAMC to establish its cardiac surgery program.
In December, Dr. Craig Tanio, reviewing commissioner of our CON application, made a recommendation to approve a heart surgery program at AAMC. His recommendation must go before the entire MHCC for a final vote and approval before heart surgery is available at AAMC.
We are confident in our application and in Commissioner Tanio's recommendation that confirmed AAMC as the best choice for a high-quality heart surgery program that will improve health care access for the region and costs for the state. We are focused on compliance with and completion of the regulatory process.
