Hospitalist Program

Patients appreciate the personalized care they get from the hospitalists at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

What is a hospitalist?

A hospitalist is a doctor of medicine who specializes in caring for you while you are hospitalized. The hospitalist is in frequent contact with your primary care physician on every aspect of your medical care, whether your admission is planned or is an emergency.

What are the advantages to having hospitalists on the staff of Anne Arundel Medical Center?

Having hospitalists on the staff of Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) means that physicians specializing in inpatient medicine are on site 24 hours a day. They direct and coordinate your care in the hospital and may request services from other specialists as needed. The widespread satisfaction with the program at AAMC is the result of a high level of communication among primary care physicians, specialists, hospitalists and the hospital’s nursing staff.

How do I contact the hospitalist assigned to my case?

Chances are, a member of the hospitalist team is right around the corner—or at least in the same building. Accessibility is one of the major advantages of the hospitalist program. Hospitalists work round-the-clock at the hospital and are very interested in keeping you and your family informed. If you or your family members have any questions during your hospital stay, please ask your nurse to contact the hospitalist who is caring for you. Alternatively, you can call 443-481-1000 between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. and ask to speak to the hospitalist caring for your family member. This Hospitalist will be happy to call and discuss your family member’s care.

How will my doctor know about my condition?

Information regarding your hospital stay will be communicated by the hospitalist to your primary care physician. The hospitalist may also discuss your medical history with your doctor to determine the most appropriate post-discharge plans. You may call 443-481-1000 between 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to speak with the hospitalist caring for you or your family member.

Depending upon the seriousness of my condition, what are the post-discharge options?

Post-discharge options range from self-care through various levels of home health aid to residential rehabilitation. A member of the hospitalist team will discuss these options with you.

Will my hospitalist be involved in follow-up care?

Usually, your relationship with your hospitalist is limited to the time spent as an inpatient at AAMC. Hospitalists do, however, make themselves readily available to primary care physicians and specialists for patient consultations.
