If you pull up Google, and begin typing “G-E-S” into the search bar, one of the first suggested topics offered by Google is “Gestational Diabetes,” a sign of just how many expectant mothers are wary of the topic, or how many just want to learn more about how the condition can impact them during their pregnancy.
In this edition of the AAMC Health Connection Podcast, AAMC gestational diabetes expert Maureen Connick, R.N., provides some insight on the warning signs that the condition could be developing, how it’s combated, and how the AAMC Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine can keep women and their baby as safe as possible through the duration of your pregnancy.

Do you know what constitutes a “high risk” pregnancy? For many women, that answer is no.
If your OB/GYN doctor determines that your pregnancy is high-risk, he or she may refer you to the specialist physicians at the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine, who will partner with you and your OB/GYN to ensure you and your baby stay healthy throughout your pregnancy.
In this edition of the AAMC Health Connection Podcast, AAMC maternal-fetal medicine specialist Jeffrey Spencer, M.D., outlines why a pregnancy might be determined as “high risk” and provides some information about the specialty of maternal-fetal medicine. In addition, he provides an overview of the diagnostic tools that can help physicians provide the best possible care to you and your baby. Physicians like Dr. Spencer are just one reason why AAMC is the safe, smart place to have your baby.

In this edition of the AAMC Health Connection Podcast, we’re joined by AAMC genetic counselor Aimee Martin, who will talk with us about one of the most popular emerging fields in medicine.

Electronic Medical Records

Anne Arundel Medical Center will launch its new electronic medical records system in Fall 2009, ushering in a new era of health care safety and automation for the hospital. The system will allow patients and their physicians convenient, electronic access to their health care records.
But what is an “electronic medical record?” How do they work? What are the benefits of the new system to AAMC’s patients and how will the new system help AAMC’s physicians provide safer, more efficient care?
In this two part edition of the AAMC Health Connection Podcast, Douglas A. Abel, AAMC’s chief information officer and AAMC primary care physician Patricia A. Czapp, M.D., discuss the new electronic medical records system, and provide answers to many of the questions Maryland residents may have about these new systems.
In Part 1, Abel and Czapp discuss why AAMC felt now was an ideal time to shift from “exploring electronic medical records” to “implementing electronic medical records.” The two also discuss why the federal government has pointed to electronic medical records as one way to provide more efficient health care.

Diagnostics Imaging Podcasts

The diagnostic imaging/radiology process is a vital component in the diagnosis of many diseases, and in some cases, is used to help “rule out” others. Advancements in the field of radiology now allow physicians an unprecedented look inside the human body, resulting in earlier diagnoses, widening the range of effective treatment options for patients.
And yet, AAMC understands that the radiology process can also be stressful for many patients. To help our patients better understand the exams their physicians may have ordered, AAMC will be offering a series of podcasts dedicated to radiology. Mammography: In this edition of the AAMC Health Connection Podcast, AAMC radiologist Daina Pack, M.D., of Annapolis Radiology Associates, discusses breast imaging, and how women can best position themselves to properly screen for breast cancer. She provides an overview of mammography, breast MRI, and breast ultrasound, as well as how some exams may actually be used in tandem.

DEXA Scans and Bone Density Imaging: DEXA scans can be truly valuable for patients with suspected osteoporosis. The scans, which measure bone density, help physicians determine a patient’s risk of developing the disease. And yet, many patients may incorrectly believe that to measure a bone’s density, the physician has to gain access to the bone. In this edition of the AAMC Health Connection Podcast, AAMC radiologist John S. Park, M.D., discusses the quick, painless procedure.
