AAMC Offers Reiki

by kimbra on August 8, 2012

Patients often look to their physician for suggestions on non-traditional, complementary methods of reducing stress or managing pain and discomfort from acute or chronic conditions. As part of our Community Health and Wellness program, Anne Arundel Medical Center offers Reiki—a popular non-invasive, non-manipulative technique to serve patients seeking to complement their medical treatment or simply to improve their wellbeing.

Similar to therapeutic touch and healing touch, Reiki is used to reduce stress and anxiety, relieve tension and fatigue, promote relaxation, and support the body’s self-healing capabilities. It is a Japanese technique that uses light to no touch to invoke the relaxation response through what practitioners consider to be an interaction with the body’s own energy field. According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, more than 1.2 million adults had used an energy healing therapy, such as Reiki, in the previous year. The National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine reports that while high-quality research evaluating Reiki’s effectiveness is limited, it is considered safe with no serious side effects. It does not interfere with medical treatment and because it is non-invasive and non-manipulative, most patients tolerate Reiki very well.
