AAMC Celebrates Hospital Week 2012

Recognizing Staff and Celebrating Service, Diversity and Wellness

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (May 11, 2012) – Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) has special events planned throughout the week of May 14-18 to celebrate Hospital Week.   Each activity is designed to show appreciation for all hospital staff and volunteers while celebrating AAMC’s history, diversity and accomplishments.   This year’s theme, “Appreciate Your Friends,” incorporates elements of Dr. Seuss into the experience.

Highlights from AAMC’s Hospital Week 2012 include:

Monday, May 14: A Remarkable Year with Many Reasons to Cheer

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

It’s been a little more than a year since AAMC opened Hospital Pavilion South, a landmark achievement which has brought more and more patients to the hospital for their care. As staff are coming in to work and leaving to go home, they’ll receive a special boost from AAMC’s senior leadership.

Tuesday, May 15: Employee Recognition Dinner

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

Employees with five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service will be honored for their milestone years of service at this highly anticipated event.

Wednesday, May 16: Cultural Diversity Festival

“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”

11:30am-2pm, Southport Eatery

Sponsored by the Cultural Diversity Nursing Initiative, the third annual AAMC Cultural Diversity Festival will feature food, music, dancing, and learning activities from all around the world.

Thursday, May 17: Take Care of You

“You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.”

11am-2pm, Southport Eatery

Staff can relax and energize with a free seated massage, Zen-like music and aromatherapy sampling.  A representative from LifeWork Strategies, AAMC’s employee assistance program, will be on hand to talk about life coaching and other stress management tools available to staff.

Friday, May 18: Bike to Work Day & Fit for a Picnic

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”

6:30am, Truxton Park and B&A Trail

Employees can ride from home or meet up with a group at these locations for Bike to Work Day.

11am-2pm, Southport Eatery

With a traditional picnic menu everyone loves, staff will enjoy food with some cultural twists! Entertainment will include a variety of “fit and fun” activities such as working out with an X-box Kinect, line dancing, Pilates reformer, jump rope, hula hoop, glide board, and spin bike.  Fit and fabulous prizes will be raffled off, including a bike, kayak, custom athletic shoes, Xbox Kinect, adventure sports equipment and gift cards.

This week marks the one-year anniversary of AAMC’s Energize program, an employee wellness movement launched at Hospital Week 2011.  Energize promotes healthier living by providing new walking paths around the various campuses, on-site group fitness classes, more options for healthier eating and team challenges.

National Hospital Week began in 1921 when a magazine editor suggested that more information about hospitals might alleviate public fears about the “shrouded” institutions of the day.  Today, National Hospital Week is the nation’s largest health care event, celebrating the history, technology and dedicated professionals that make such facilities beacons of confidence and care.
