AAMC Health Services – Kent Island Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q:        Where is this new facility located?
A:        AAMC Health Services – Kent Island is located at 1630 Main Street in Chester, Md., on the north side of Route 50 at the Route 18 overpass.  The new facility is adjacent to the new Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department.

Q:        What is AAMC’s relationship with the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department?
A:        The Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department (KIVFD) was instrumental during the planning stages of AAMC’s new facility, and the two groups continue to work cooperatively to serve patients of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
Originally, the KIVFD owned the four-acre lot on which AAMC Health Services – Kent Island was built.  AAMC purchased the land in 2006 with the intention of constructing an outpatient medical facility.  The two facilities now share a central parking lot.

Q:        Is the AAMC Health Services – Kent Island facility part of the recent affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine?
A:        Yes.  AAMC and Johns Hopkins Medicine have affiliated to bring urgent care services to the residents of the Eastern Shore.  The result is the urgent care center within AAMC Health Services – Kent Island, staffed by physicians of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians.

Q:        Is there an emergency room in AAMC Health Services – Kent Island?
A:        No.  AAMC’s new facility will have an extended-hours urgent care center, but will not offer emergency services.  Patients in need of emergency services will be brought, via ambulance, to AAMC’s main campus in Annapolis.

Q:        What is the difference between “urgent care” and “emergency care?”
A:        For patients with a slight fever, nausea, an irritating cough, or a cut that may need stitches, the urgent care center is appropriate.
For patients experiencing life-threatening symptoms such as shortness of breath or chest pain, calling 9-1-1 is the best course of action.
Urgent care services are designed for patients who need medical attention but who are  not experiencing symptoms that could be potentially life-threatening.
Urgent care services are also appropriate for parents who are concerned about such children’s problems as an upset stomach, fever, or minor scrapes and burns.

Q:        Will there be diagnostic services and laboratory services at the new facility?
A:        Yes.  AAMC Health Services – Kent Island will feature both a satellite AAMC Laboratory location and a new, full-service Anne Arundel Diagnostics location, complete with X-Ray, ultrasound, MRI, CT, and digital mammography services.  The AAMC Laboratory is able to draw blood for patients required by their insurance carrier to use Quest or LabCorp.

Q:        What are the hours of operation of the new facility?
A:        Physician practices in AAMC Health Services – Kent Island will operate during regular business hours, which may vary slightly from practice to practice.
The facility’s urgent care center, operated by Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, will be open
    > Monday—Friday: 9 a.m.—9 p.m.
    > Saturday—Sunday: 10 a.m.—5 p.m.
    >Christmas and Thanksgiving: Closed

Q:        How did AAMC decide which services to offer in the new building?
A:        In the planning phases for the new Kent Island facility, AAMC held community focus groups and conducted qualitative and quantitative research to learn from Eastern Shore residents which medical services they needed.

Q:        The population of the Eastern Shore is growing quickly.  Will there be pediatric services in the new building?
A:        Yes.  In addition to the AAMC-affiliated pediatric specialists maintaining regular office hours on the building’s second floor, the new urgent care practice can serve pediatric patients and their families.

Q:        I need a new physician.  What number can I call to make an appointment?
