Promising Treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is a disorder of the trigeminal nerve that causes incapacitating episodes of facial pain. The trigeminal nerve, one of the largest cranial nerves, sends impulses to the brain from the face, jaw, forehead and around the eyes. Sometimes the nerve root is compressed by blood vessels touching the brain stem, and over time the nerve may receive abnormal impulses and become hyperactive. This can cause spasms and excruciating pain. Episodes of TN, which usually last for several seconds and can recur regularly throughout the day, may be triggered by such everyday activities as talking, feeling a breeze on the face, or chewing and swallowing.

Radiation therapy with Novalis Stereotactic radiosurgery is one promising and innovative treatment for TN. AAMC specialists have successfully treated many patients with highly focused beams of radiation. About 80 percent of patients treated thus far with Novalis have enjoyed a significant or complete reduction of pain within four to eight weeks of treatment.

Our Facial Pain Center provides multidisciplinary pain management for TN and other neuropathic facial pain syndromes. Our team also participates in regular case conferences to discuss the best treatment options for our patients.
