Emergency Department

Accessing Emergency Services

ED EntranceThe Emergency Department (ED), located in the Acute Care Pavilion on Jennifer Road, offers state of the art emergency and acute care services to the region.

--For all life-threatening medical conditions, call 911. For less acute medical conditions, check with your primary care physician before coming to the Emergency Department as this may prevent an unnecessary visit. To locate the Emergency Department, turn onto Pavilion Parkway, where the large red "Emergency" sign is located on the side of the Acute Care Pavilion.

--Drop-off and short-term parking is available in front of the ED. Long-term parking is available in the Acute Care Pavilion parking garage. To access this parking, drive behind the Acute Care Pavilion. The garage connects to the main Garden Lobby. Volunteers are on duty to escort family members to the ED from the Garden Lobby.

--Patients arriving by ambulance will enter the ED through a separate entrance located at the rear of the ED. This entrance is for ambulances only. Family members should enter the ED through the front entrance. ED front desk personnel will assist family members with information and escort them to the patient's assigned room. Due to the large volume of patients being cared for in the ED at any one time and the need for privacy, it is requested that visitors are kept to a minimum.

Emergency Department Services

The ED lounge
  • Emergency trained physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week and specialists are on call for consultation.
  • Emergency trained nurses and medical technicians provide nursing care and monitor patient conditions throughout the episode of care. All patients are triaged by nursing staff and assigned a priority based on the assessed medical need. Those patients with more serious conditions are treated in the main ED area while patients with less acute conditions are treated in the minor treatment area. Eighteen rooms are designated for acutely ill patients, two for trauma care, one for OB-GYN, and eight for non-urgent care. Ten additional rooms are designated for clinical decision-making.
  • Suturing and casting services are available for minor trauma. High-level trauma patients are stabilized and transferred to nearby trauma centers.
  • X-ray services are available within the ED to expedite diagnosis and treatment. A full-service radiology department is located on the same floor for more extensive diagnostic testing. New technology allows x-rays be transmitted electronically enabling the ED doctors, specialists, and primary care physicians to view x-rays and other diagnostic tests on a computer within minutes of being taken.
  • Hospitalists and Intensivists (doctors specially trained in critical care and inpatient care) admit patients to the Acute Care Pavilion once the determination is made that further medical and nursing are needed.
  • Mental health assessment and placement services are provided by licensed mental health clinicians.
  • Domestic Violence assessment and support services are provided by trained counselors.
  • Patient Advocates and volunteers are available to assist families with personal needs and comfort care.
  • Interpreters and spiritual care are also available upon request. The Meditation Center and Healing Gardens are located down the hall from the ED waiting room.

Visitor Services

Telephones are located in the waiting area. A large screen television and vending machines are conveniently located in the same area. A special telephone is available for the hearing impaired. Cell phone use is prohibited in the patient care rooms due to possible interference with electrical monitoring devices.
