Treatments for Vascular Disease

Thanks in part to the pioneering efforts of physicians at the AAMC Vascular Center, newer and more advanced surgical techniques have made most surgery related to many vascular diseases far less invasive than in the past.

Treatments for the arterial forms of vascular diseases may include either medication or surgery, or some combination of both. Examples of surgical procedures are balloon angioplasty, stent deployment (the placement of a kind of wire cage in an artery to spread its walls and hold them open) and endovascular procedures or bypass surgery.

Venous vascular disease typically affects veins in the legs. Its causes and treatment differ widely from arterial disease.
