AAMC's NICU: Caring for Special Infants
Nancy and Eddie Halle of Davidsonville bond with their twins Angelina and Marco in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In November 2006, Anne Arundel Medical Center opened its new and expanded neonatal intensive care unit. The renovated unit, which was expanded from 900 square feet to 7,000 square feet, features 20 new private rooms and more space for the staff to observe and care for their patients. The additional space is welcome at AAMC, where more than 5,200 babies are born a year, making the hospital second in the state in number of births. As the only hospital in the county with a Level III+ NICU, AAMC provides life-supporting care for more than 500 critically ill infants annually. Nearly 4,000 infants have been cared for since the hospital opened its NICU in 1995. The additional space will give the medical staff a better environment to monitor patients and offer more privacy for patients, their parents and families. “Our staff and technology provide these fragile infants with the best possible care available,” said Dr. Suzanne Rindfleisch, neonatologist and medical director of the NICU. In the decade that Dr. Rindfleisch has been at AAMC, she’s seen the NICU grow dramatically. “We have two neonatologists, four nurse practitioners, four part-time nurse practitioners, and three pediatricians on staff,” she said. In addition, the nursing staff also has grown. “All of the nursing staff has expertise in neonatal nursing care, some with as much as 25 years of experience, and we provide an extensive orientation for any of the new staff members whether they are experienced or a new nursing graduate,” said Carol Lacher, clinical director for the NICU and Pediatrics. Annapolis residents Albert and Suzanne Lord donated $1 million toward the new NICU, which is named “Teddy’s Place,” in honor of Mrs. Lord’s aunt, Florence E. Cornelison, who cared for her when her parents became ill. AAMC's NICU provides the latest medical care close to home:
