Although you will receive specific instructions before your procedure, below are the general guidelines to help you prepare for a safe and stress-free visit. Contact our Surgical Prep Team at 443-481-1840 if you have any questions or download our Preparing for Your Procedure guide (PDF) or Edwards Surgical Pavilion guide (PDF) to learn more.
Several Days Before Your Procedure
Answer Your Pre-Procedure Interviews. An Anne Arundel Medical Center customer service representative may contact you by phone within one week of your surgery to gather demographic and insurance information. In addition, two to three days before your surgery, a Surgical Prep Team nurse will call you to compile a health history and give you instructions related to your surgery.
If you DO NOT receive a call from our Prep Team, please call 443-481-1840. Leave your name and phone number and your call will be returned.
Complete Your Pre-Procedure Testing Within 7 to 30 days Before Your Procedure Date. All patients scheduled to receive anesthesia, whether a localized numbing agent or a general anesthetic, must have a documented health history and physical exam. Blood tests, electrocardiograms, chest X-rays and consultation with a specialist, such as a cardiologist, may also be required prior to your procedure. These tests may be conducted by your primary care physician, your surgeon, or at the Anne Arundel Medical Center Pre-Anesthesia Testing Center (PAT). We suggest you call for an appointment as soon as your procedure is scheduled.
If you do not have a primary care physician or can't get a timely appointment, please contact the PAT at 443-481-3624.
If your insurance requires testing at an independent testing center, please authorize the testing center to fax the results to the Anne Arundel Medical Center Surgical Prep Team at 443-481-1844.
Arrange for Someone to Drive You Home and Remain With You for 24 Hours following your procedure. For safety reasons, we cannot perform your procedure if you do not have someone to drive you home.
Contact the Hospital's Patient Advocate at 443-481-4820 if you are interested in advance directives.
The Day Before Your Procedure
Listen to Your Reminder Call. You will receive an automated reminder call the day before your procedure that will include the time of your procedure and the time you are expected to arrive at the hospital. (Monday procedures will receive a reminder call on the Friday before.)
Do Not Smoke or Drink Alcoholic Beverages 24 hours prior to your procedure.
Do Not Eat or Drink Anything after midnight of the night prior to your procedure, unless instructed otherwise by your physician.
Follow All Other Pre-Procedure Instructions given to you by the nurse during your pre-procedure telephone interview.
