Bringing Heart Surgery Home

  • Bringing Heart Surgery to Anne Arundel Medical Center

AAMC, a regional health system headquartered in Annapolis, is the third busiest medical center in Maryland as measured by the number of patients it cares for each year. Nationally recognized in heart care, our specialists perform thousands of cardiac-related procedures every year. AAMC offers a wide range of quality heart services, from prevention and diagnosis of heart disease to interventional cardiology procedures and rehabilitation. The missing link is heart surgery.

In 2015, AAMC filed a Certificate of Need (CON) application with the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) to gain approval to develop a cardiac surgery program at the hospital. AAMC will collaborate with the Johns Hopkins Division of Cardiac Surgery to bring renowned cardiac surgeons to AAMC to establish its cardiac surgery program.

In December 2016, Dr. Craig Tanio, reviewing commissioner of our CON application, made a recommendation to approve a heart surgery program at AAMC. The recommendation was unanimously approved by the entire MHCC in March, 2017.

In April 2019, after more than two years of being tied up in the court system, we were given the green light to move forward with our plans to bring this important service to our community.

This cardiac surgery program will allow us to provide the full continuum of cardiac services. In essence, we will no longer have to transfer hundreds of AAMC patients to other programs outside of our region each year. This is a true win for our patients, their families and the community!

With the ability to move forward, we are able to begin our recruitment of key staff to lead and develop our program. We anticipate that we will be able to provide patients with cardiac surgery services in spring of 2020.
